The Story

Ever since I was old enough to remember, I have been in love with open wheel sprint car racing.  It all started one hot, summer Friday evening when my family was building a new house very close to Williams Grove Speedway, where I still live today. While playing at the house while it was still under construction, I heard the sounds that would become my passion for so many years to come.  I asked what they were, and a smile came across my fathers face. He knew........"it was time!"  While on our way home that night, we pulled into the parking lot at Williams Grove and I was instantly hooked, just from the sounds, sights and smells of this new experience. I did not miss a Friday night race at "The Grove" until my own career started in the summer of 2002, a run of 14 years. Although I had pestered my parents for the usual go karts and the likes, my need for speed was ever increasing. My father's company, Doorways Unlimited, Inc. sponsors the KARS 358 sprint series, so I was really getting the itch, going to flea markets, races and the things racers do. We would pass go karts and I would ask if I could get one and my dad would just chuckle.  Finally, one day while reading the classified ads in Paul Fitzsimmons' "Micro Racing" website, I found my car. Jeff Lewis of Mechanicsburg, PA was selling a Danny Jones "Jet" chassis roller that was his brother Ron's. They both decided to go 600cc racing.  I had my car. I'd work during the summer for my father, and still do, to support this thing that I love to do, and we've come a long way since hauling that car home and never dreaming of the time and effort that was soon to be put forth in this adventure. Many setbacks ensued, junk motors, things that wouldn't fit the car, you name it, it happened. That's where I was shocked at my dad's patience, because it's usually nonexistent!  But he showed me the way to persevere through all the bad times and keep moving ahead. Enter Mike Dicely of Hyper Racing. After accessing the chassis and the likes, he suggested a used motor he had for sale instead of putting a lot of money into changing the car. What a great move!  He and the whole gang at Hyper racing have become very good friends, and I thank them for all the help and support that they have given me. Then came the time to put the car on the track for the first time, not to mention the first time behind the wheel of any sort of racing machine. Linda's Speedway, March 2002, 20 degrees, sunny and 40 mph winds! I held onto it that day with my dad and his crew chief for his 358 sponsored team of Danny Richcreek, Billy Houdeshell, who also owns Star Wings. They told me after those wild, windy laps that if I could handle those conditions, I'd be fine. So it was off to Path Valley to race. It was such a good experience there, we decided to call it home for the summer of 2002. We also traveled a lot because we had one weekend off a month last year, visiting the likes of Marion Center,Blanket Hill, Trailways, Linda's,Greenwood Valley, Lincoln Speedway and Shippensburg. After a lot of early season rookie accidents, some my fault, some not, we seemed to settle down and get a little better each week. We are looking forward to my "sophomore" season in 2003 and hoping to avoid the dreaded "sophomore slump" season. Well, that's pretty much it, but if you'd like to ask anything else, please do so by posting a comment on here or look for us at any of the races or events listed on out 2003 Schedule! Hope to see you at the races!

Greg
